2021 Gymnastics Festival

 2021 Gymnastics Festival

On Tuesday the 25th of May, lots of schools from around Gisborne, including ours, participated in the 2021 gymnastics festival! It was optinable to go but me, around 20 other girls and 4 boys chose to go to represent our school. We practised 4 afternoons a week, and we got around 3 weeks to practice. On Tuesday, we hopped into different parents cars and headed off to the gymnasian.

When we arrived at our destination, the gymnastics club, we got out of the car and headed into the gymnasium. It was freezing! We were only in leotards, shorts and a jersie when we got there but inside, we had to take our clothes off except for the leotards. We practised in the trampoline part of the gym, bar, beam, floor and vault. Other schools started to join us, I thought our leotards were the coolest. After all the schools arrived, we headed into the real gym to start the competition.

We started on floor. I wasn't the first one to go luckily, I was near the middle. The floor routine went like this, Quarter turn, forwards roll, half turn, backwards roll, side sachet, half turn, side sachet and a cartwheel. My score was 8.7. After everyone had had a turn a floor, we moved on to beam.

When we approached beam, the school that was previously on beam went to floor. We had to stay in the same order as the floor. The beam routine went like this, hop onto the beam with your legs hanging from each side, swing your legs up onto the beam, put one leg in the air and hold for 2 seconds, stand up, walk by dipping one leg then tiptoeing 2 times, turn around on you tiptoes and put on leg up, hold for 2 seconds, do 2 pretty ponies and star jump off the beam. my score was 8.9. After than we moved onto vault because girls are not allowed to to bar.

Last but not least vault, my favorite. We got one practise to go over or on top of the vault. On Betsy's practise, she went right over it, face planting on the mat bellow! On my practise I went over it, landing on the mat. This is how the vault routine goes, use the springboard to go over or on top of the vault. My score was 8.6 I think?

Did any of you compete in the 2021 gym festival?🐉

Musk ox Report

 Musk Ox Report

The Musk ox is a breed of ox that lives in the Arctic. They weigh around 285 kg, and their scientific name is Ovibos Moschatus. This is my report on musk ox.

Habitat:

Musk ox live in the frigid Arctic, roaming around, looking for roots and moss. In Winter they use their hooves to dig through snow to find buried food, while during Summer, they munch on Summer plants, sprouting through the snow.

Diet:

Musk ox are herbivores, that means they eat plants only. They eat a wide variety of plants including grass, moss, sedges, forbs and woody plants. Sometimes they dig up roots from previous years, rotten or not.

Characteristics:

Musk ox have short, curling horns on each side of their head. Males horns form a headband like shape that crosses the front of their forehead. Their coat is usually brown, black, grey and really, really rarely, white.
BBC - Earth - Huge musk ox in head on clash

Predators:

The musk ox has only a few predators such as wolves, bears and humans. They also have accidents like falling from cliffs, drowning and starvation from all of their food source getting buried from snow and ice.

Fun Facts:

Did you know that musk ox can run up to a speed of 60 km per hour? They can also live up to about 20 years old in the wild. Did you know that musk ox are more related to goats and sheep than any other animal?

L3 Writing - Fireman Saves Kitten

L3 Writing - Fireman Saves Kitten

For our L3 writing workshop, we had to write about a video we watched: Fireman Saves Kitten. We had to pretend that we were the fireman. I am re-writing this writing from my book to this blog for my blog post this week. Below is my writing so I hope you enjoy it!!

I took a few steps backwards from the hose after extinguishing the fire. The old brick house was still standing, barely. The beautiful cherry-red bricks were darkened to a crimson-black. It was lucky that the fire didn't spread to the trees, as it would of engulfed the tree, making the flames burst in size. Me and three other firemen decided to scan the little house. It was as if we were in a movie of some sort. As we approached the house, the smoke thickened, like quick sand engulfing your last breath. My suit gave me the ability to breath through this darkness of smoke but weighed me down, making it hard to move, hold and walk over weak floorboards. Communicating on the radio, I step through the doorway of the house, floorboards creaking underneath me, as I do so smoke and ash gather on my mask. It was like it didn't want me to go any further, but I pushed on.

The fire had caused the ceiling to collapse into the house, leaving installation all over the floor. It was like the clouds had fallen down, burnt by the fire. The ash and installation together made a soft surface under my big boots. I carried on through what used to be the living room into the blackened, burnt hallway. Using my flashlight, I scanned the house, reporting back to the other firefighters what I could see and what was left of furnisher. As I was scanning the room I came across a burnt child's toy that looked like a little kitten. I picked it up in my gloved hand, feeling its weight and size. It was a really realistic toy, maybe a little too realistic...

Suddenly I dashed out of the room, as fast as I could in my weighted down suit. Holding the kitten carefully, I ran out of the smoke-infested house, straight to the fire truck. I layed the kitten down on the ground as carefully as I could and grabbed the oxygen mask, placing it over the kittens face. A few other firemen came to see what I was doing, at this point I was pouring water over the limp body of the cat. I hoped with all my heart that the little tabby cat would live. Slowly the kittens eyes opened, revealing yellow eyes full of pain. With relief, I held the kitten close to my body, cuddling it with careful arms.

Kapa Haka Festival 2020

 Kapa Haka Festival 2020

In Term 4, Week 6, on Wednesday, WBS (Wainui Beach School) finally had our Kapa Haka Festival. We had been practising Kapa haka for the whole year and, to be honest, got over practising the songs over and over again.

As soon as the whole of Moana got their Kapa Haka uniforms and mokos on, we hopped on the bus and drove towards the festival. When we arrived, the front row got their pew pews on and the rest of the rows lined up. We practised a few of our songs then got ready to set foot on the stage.

All of the rows walked onto the large stage at the same time and started to line up in straight rows. When the boys sorted out their rows, Matiria and Klara started off the song E te ariki. We all huddled in a bunch and started to sing. (It is extremely loud when you are all huddled in a bunch).

After E te ariki Matiria and Klara started the song Utaina. (Utaina is one of my favorite songs). Girls and boys sing the same song the first time we sing the song but in the second round, the boys sing a haka when the girls carry on singing. During the second round the girls start to move backwards when the boys move forwards.

With the boys at the front and the girls at the back, the boys start to chant the haka. One of the hakas is Kamate Kamate. The girls had to join in and chant the haka with the boys too.

Still at the back, Matiria and Klara started off Rona e. In this song the girls use the poi and the boys do actions to the song. The poi actions are pretty easy.  Most of it is just swinging around the poi but it still looks really cool. In the second round of Rona e, the girls move forwards again and the boys move backwards.

After Rona e the girls and boys both sing Wainui e, our school song. During the song the boys walk off the stage and then the girls but the front row of girls stay on until the end.

The Kapa Haka Festival was so fun. I cant wait until next year.

A Trip to Phitia Farm

 A Trip to Phitia Farm

During week 9, day 2 (Tuesday) WBS went to Phitia Farm... well it is not that dramatic. Anyway, here is a blog on a farm trip. Yay.

Station 1: The Cow

As soon as we hopped of the bus, we were sorted into lines and were split up into different stations. The first station was the cow (hints the sub-title). So we got to go visit a female cow. On the bench, in the middle of the paddock, there was whipped cream, milk, chocolate milk, cheese and butter. My arms got so tired when everyone took turns shaking cows milk.

Station 2: The Butcher

The next stop we got to was the butcher. We had to see a year old lamb get chopped up by a butcher. I stayed and watched the poor thing get butchered but other people (mostly girls) went out and did not want to watch it.

Station 3: The Vehicles

The 3rd stop was vehicles. There were 4 vehicles that we could climb on and play on, a tractor, a 4 wheel drive, a motorcycle and a farm truck with 2 dog cages in the back. The tractor was green, the 4 wheel drive and the motorcycle was red and the truck was white.

Station 4: The Drone

Stop 4 was the drone. At the drone we got to watch a tv that attached to the drone so were ever the drone went we could see where it was going. We even saw a crashed 4 wheel drive but it was only fake though!

Last Station: Sheep

The last station of our trip was the sheep. We got to see farm dogs herd sheep into the corner of the paddock. There was a woof woof dog and a stare stare dog. The woof woof dog barked at the sheep and the stare stare dog stared at the sheep to herd them. We also got to see sheep get shorn!

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed going on this trip!!
